Description

The trip to the “Scotland of the East” (Shillong) and the “Wettest Place on Earth” (Cherrapunji). The former the capital of and the latter a district of Meghalaya State of India. “Meghalaya” literally means “The abode of Clouds”. Also a trip to Mawlynnong, a village in Meghalaya famed as the “Cleanest village in Asia”. Walk on the world famous “Living Root Bridge” in the village of Riwai and fill oneself with wonder. So travellers can easily fill up the imagery of this trip, which will be dotted with picturesque waterfalls along the way.

Itinerary

1

Day 1: GUWAHATI AIRPORT – SHILLONG (130 KMS / 3 ½ hrs drive)

  • Arrive Guwahati airport and drive to Shillong (140 kms / 4 hrs drive approx).Arrive Guwahati airport and drive to Shillong (140 kms / 4 hrs drive approx).
  • En route visit the breathtaking view of ”Umiam Lake” or “Barapani Lake” – which is the biggest artificial lake in Meghalaya and is surrounded by  hills dotted with Khasi Pine trees.
  • Check-in the designated Hotel and after refreshment travellers can opt for a visit to the Cathedral of Mary and Ward’s Lake.
  • Evening is a  free period of leisure to explore the region on own. The residents are very friendly and welcoming. You may take a walk to the famous Police Bazaar for shopping of famous leather goods items or traditional artifacts.
  • Overnight stay in Shillong.

Day 2: SHILLONG – CHERRAPUNJEE – SHILLONG (60 KMs / 2 hrs)

  • En route visit the famous Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak – to enjoy a bird’s eye view of Shillong city.
  • At Sohra, stop at the Duwan Sing Syiem view-point for mesmerizing views of the Hills for which Meghalaya is famous for.
  • In Cherrapunji be witness to the gorgeous Seven Sisters Falls and Nohkalikai Falls.
  • Later take a guided walk inside the Mawsmai Cave. The limestone in the cave is a natural wonder with innumerable kaleidoscopic formations inside it.
  • After lunch at Cherrapunjee, visit Thankarang Park from where you can gaze at different falls in that area and also a part of the international India-Bangladesh border.
  • Drive back to Shillong for overnight stay. Note: Most of the waterfalls are dry during winter season.

Day 3: SHILLONG – MAWLYNNONG – SHILLONG

  • After breakfast drive to Mawlynnong, the cleanest village in Asia (100 kms / 3 hrs drive approx), also known as ‘God’s own Garden’.   • Climb the 80 ft Sky Walk at Mawlynnong village for a bird’s eye view of the Village, the plantations and faraway plains of Bangladesh. You will also be acquainted to the Khasi lifestyle, their culture and economy.
  • Then  trek to the nearby Riwai Village is another interesting activity. Walk down a flight of almost 100 steps to witness nature’s wonder, living-root bridge.  The bridges are tangles of massive thick roots, which the local people intertwine them to form a bridge that can hold several people at a time. The root bridges, may be up to over a hundred feet long and take ten to fifteen years to become fully functional, but they become very strong in the process. The bridges live and keep growing and strengthen over time. The useful lifespan of the bridges, is thought to be 500–600 years.
  • Drive Further 30 Kms from Mawlynnong to reach Dawki. Dawki, name is famous because of international trade border town to Bangladesh. The Drive to Dawki is a beautiful drive along with Bangladesh border, covered with betel nut trees and a thrilling experience to drive around lots of waterfalls. You can see people from Bangladesh working and fishing in this river being in Indian Border. Before reaching the bordering town you will came across with this blue-water river which is known as Umngot river. Dawki village is known for limestone business and other international trade with Bangladesh and weekly market allows people from both sides to tread their stuffs.
  • Return to Shillong for overnight stay. Note: It is advisable to carry packed lunch to Mawlynnong.

  • After breakfast transfer to Guwahati Airport. TOUR ENDS HERE.
